Africanized Honey Bees
Africanized Honey Bees also referred as “Killer Bees” are not native to Arizona. They migrated through South and Central America into the Tucson region in 1991. Characteristics of this species include assertive mating habits, produce more honey, frequent swarming, and most importantly an aggressive defense of their colony. These characteristics have resulted in Africanized Honey Bees becoming the most dominate species of bee in this region, forcing out native species.
Africanized Bees have gained their notoriety from there aggressive nature. The concern is that bees usually establish their hives in large void areas that are protected from the elements and easily defended. Unfortunately small gaps in construction allow access to wall and ceiling voids that are ideal for bees.
With bees in close proximity to humans combined with their aggressive nature, bees present a serious concern and liability for property owners. While the threat of bees is real, don’t make hasty decisions and fall for fear tactics when selecting a pest professional.
