Signs of Termites and Termite Infestation

Signs of Termites

With Termites causing more damage than fire, floods, and and other natural disasters, Termites threat to wood-based structures is of high priority.  This is especially true in Arizona, as both Subterranean Termites and Drywood Termites tend to be more active in warmer climates.  As a homeowner, the key to preventing Termite damage is by learning how to recognize the warning signs of an infestation.

Termite Damage

Hollow-Sounding Wood

Termites tend to reside in dark, humid environments.  This means they would rather feed on the inner part of the wood than the wood surface that is visible to the human eye.  In fact, the wood of your house may appear completely smooth on the outside, while the Termites are inflicting substantial damage below the surface.  If you tap the wooden structure of your house and it sounds hollow, this may be a sign that Termites are eating your wood from the inside out.

Groups of Discarded Wings

The reproductive Termites are called swarmers, as they take flight in order to create new Termite colonies.  While Drywood swarms are difficult to predict, Subterranean Termites usually swarm in the springtime.  If you notice a swarm of insects or spot a group of discarded wings near your house, you should immediately contact a local residential pest control service in Tucson.

Mud Tubes on Exterior Walls

Subterranean Termites construct mud tubes on surface areas, including your home’s foundation.  These tubes provide the Termites with moisture as they search your home for more food.  For this reason, you shouldn’t store any mulch, firewood, or wood chips near your home.  All of these items help create a moisture-rich environment where Termites thrive.

Cracked paint

Swarming Drywood Termites can enter your house through small openings in the paint.  To prevent infestation, make sure you monitor your house for any cracks in your foundation or near your roof siding, vents, and windows.
